Saray Ramírez Rodríguez has joined Fundació ENT to work in the waste management area and on the COMPERF4EU project – Optimising Biowaste Composting Plant Performance for a Circular and Safe Bioeconomy Across Europe. She is a specialist in the agri-food sector, with extensive experience in fisheries, innovation, and food waste management, as well as in the development of proposals and implementation of projects at the European level.
Saray Ramírez Rodríguez holds a PhD in Sustainability from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (agri-food and fisheries sector), a degree in Biology from the UAB, and a Master’s degree in Aquaculture from the University of Barcelona. Specialised in food waste quantification and prevention, the Blue Economy, innovation, and the economic and social sustainability of the fisheries sector, she has extensive experience in participatory processes and local development. She has published articles in journals such as Journal of Cleaner Production, Waste Management, Fisheries Research, and Food & Humanity. Between 2022 and 2026, she worked at CREDA as a Research Technician, where she also completed her PhD. In addition, she served as an Associate Professor at the School of Agri-Food and Biosystems Engineering of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

The COMPERF4EU project analyses national policies and treatment systems for biowaste and biodegradable and compostable packaging (BCP), and compares the performance of composting plants across 10 selected EU and non-EU countries. Through literature reviews, plant-level data, and stakeholder consultations, the project identifies top-performing facilities using key performance indicators to ensure that the co-treatment of BCP and biowaste achieves complete biodegradation, minimises emissions, and produces sustainable compost. The results will support the development of a composting information tool incorporating data and best practices from EU countries, technical adaptation guidelines to enable the safe and efficient integration of compostable packaging into industrial composting systems, and a policy guide aimed at harmonising composting practices across Europe. The consortium includes six partners under the leadership of Fundació ENT, as well as an academic institution (Wageningen Research), the European Compost Network (ECN), two national composting associations (VLACO from Belgium and CIC from Italy), and the Compostable by Design Platform (CbDP).
