The Cabildo de Lanzarote (Canary Islands) was the first local Administration in Spain to consider the introduction of a tax on tourism, locally known as “ecotax”. The only previous experience in Spain was in the balearic islands, a very different one, since it was implemented by an entire Autonomous Community.

ENT Environment and Management developed part of the study consisting of designing the new tax, discussing pros and cons and evaluating the main alternatives, developing some scenarios and calculating the revenue generated in each case. The report also raised practical possibilities of introducing environmental criteria in already existing taxes in the seven municipalities of the Island.
