The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) commissioned a study to ENT in order to economically quantify the economic benefits that would produce a set of actions that would improve the water quality in households of the metropolitan area of Barcelona.

From avoided costs valuation methodologies, developing dose-response functions and using econometric techniques, the potential benefits in the form of reduced degradation and reduced energy consumption of certain goods, were calculated. Lower consumption of soaps and detergents, reduction of bottled water consumption and extended durability of the domestic plumbing were also considered.

The overall estimated savings were in the range of about 100 Euros per annum per households.
