This is a European Commission-funded research project which seeks into the economic benefits of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and other spatial protection measures (SPMs) including no-take marine reserves, multiple-use marine protected areas, fisheries spatial protected measures and de-facto refuges.

The purpose of the research is to draw together the existing evidence on the blue economy benefits of MPAs and SPMs in order to inform future debate and decisions on marine management and identify further research needs.

ICF Consulting Services Limited (www.icf.com) is responsible for managing the project, together with the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) (www.ieep.eu) and Plymouth Marine Laboratory (www.pml.ac.uk). The research is also supported by individual regional sea experts from ENT Environment & Management, University Catania (www.unict.it), Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research (www.io-warnemuende.de), and the Black Sea NGO Network (www.bsnn.org).
