In July 2026, the CirBioWaste project organised two complementary capacity-building activities to promote innovative bio-waste management solutions across the Mediterranean region.
On 7 July, around 70 participants from municipalities, waste management organisations and partner institutions joined the Second Online Training on Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) schemes. The event – with contributions from Maria Calaf (ENT) and Michele Giavini (CIC) explored how PAYT can increase separate bio-waste collection rates, improve waste quality and raise citizens’ awareness, while providing practical guidance for successful implementation. On 8–9 July, project partners took part in the Second Study Tour to the Mancomunidad de Tentudía (Extremadura, Spain), where they visited one of Spain’s most successful door-to-door (PaP) waste collection systems. Since its implementation in 2024, the system has increased the recycling rate from around 9% to over 66%, thanks to efficient collection, RFID-based monitoring and strong public engagement.
Together, both activities offered valuable opportunities to exchange experiences, learn from successful practices and support public authorities in developing more sustainable and circular bio-waste management systems across the Euro-MED region.
