In Spain waste charges are widely implemented, but the application of pay-as-you-throw schemes is very limited. At the time of publication of this article, only five Spanish municipalities had implemented this kind of charges for household waste, and a few more for commercial waste. The results were very positive in all cases, both in terms of levels of selective collection and quality of the collected materials. The article details the features of the application of pay-as–you-throw systems in each of the municipalities.
