The European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2026 has officially opened its abstract submission period. Researchers and practitioners are invited to contribute to Session BG8.5 – Enhancing science-based knowledge on forests’ capacities to mitigate climate change, which will take place in Vienna and online from 3–8 May 2026.
Carbon sequestration by forests has gained increasing attention as a key nature-based solution to climate change. Advances in technology and sustained scientific focus have significantly improved forest management practices, supporting multiple forest functions such as biodiversity and soil conservation, resilience to major disturbances (including droughts, wildfires, storms, and floods), and the enhancement of forest carbon stocks over the short, medium, and long term.
This EGU 2026 session aims to deepen understanding of forests’ mitigation potential by bringing together cutting-edge, multi- and interdisciplinary research. Contributions may address topics such as advanced ICTs, modelling approaches, climatology, hydrology, soil science, ecology, and the broader role of forests in bioeconomy and rural development, while also considering ecosystem services and socio-economic impacts.
The session aligns closely with the objectives of OPTforEU (ENT’s project), fostering the exchange of science-based knowledge on the environmental benefits, social acceptability, and economic value of forest-based climate mitigation actions.
Forest scientists, as well as experts in related fields including climatology, biophysical and socio-economic modelling, are strongly encouraged to submit their abstracts and share their latest findings.
