Abstract

The restoration of Platja Llarga in Vilanova i la Geltrú (Barcelona, Spain) illustrates the role of nature-based solutions in enhancing coastal resilience and biodiversity in Mediterranean urban contexts. Historically degraded by urbanization, agricultural transformation, and coastal infrastructure, this 10-hectare former wetland and dune system faced increasing risks from erosion and flooding. Beginning in the early 2000s, strong civic advocacy and environmental opposition halted planned urban development and catalyzed a transition toward ecological restoration. Interventions included dune stabilization, removal of invasive species, reintroduction of native vegetation, and wetland recovery, supported by multi-level governance and European funding. These efforts have led to measurable improvements in habitat quality and biodiversity, including the return of key species, while strengthening the area’s capacity to buffer climate impacts. The case highlights the importance of community engagement, integrated planning, and long-term institutional support in safeguarding vulnerable coastal ecosystems as part of broader climate adaptation strategies.
