Ignasi Puig and Marta Jofra (ENT) have participated in the Athens 2015 International Landfill Mining Conference. At the conference, in the framework of the session devoted to “Landfill mining: technical, economic and environmental issues”, Ignasi Puig presented the paper “Landfill mining potential in Spain and preliminary review of experiences”. The presentation illustrates the main results from the report prepared by ENT in the framework of a research call for proposals by Fundación Mapfre. The report estimates the amount of waste deposited historically in Spanish landfills, the composition and the amount of materials that are potentially recyclable. It also includes a preliminary assessment of the landfill mining technologies, its cost, the generated and avoided emissions and the implications in terms of job creation.
In another session, “New technologies in waste management”, Ignasi Puig acted as a moderator. The LIFE EWAS also had a presentation entitled “Using ICT tools for Achieving efficient and sustainable waste management, enabling GHG emission reduction – The example of LIFE EWAS“, with Marta Jofra as co-author.
